The Importance of Eating as a Family

In our busy world, it’s easy to overlook something as simple as sitting down to eat together. But did you know that sharing family meals has incredible benefits for both parents and kids?

Why Eating Together Matters:

  • Stronger Connections: Family meals create space to bond, share stories, and build meaningful relationships.

  • Healthier Choices: Studies show that families who eat together tend to consume more fruits, veggies, and wholesome meals.

  • Better Habits for Kids: Children learn table manners, develop a healthy relationship with food, and are less likely to turn to screens during mealtime.

  • Lower Stress: Sitting down together creates a rhythm in our lives and reduces stress—for adults and kids alike!

According to Johns Hopkins clinical dietitian Jaclyn Rose, there’s research supporting health benefits for adults and kids who regularly dine together. “Patterns developed in childhood can shape an adult’s relationship with food and set a foundation for healthy eating habits,” Rose says. Family meals nourish and strengthen more than the body. “Research studies show that eating together regularly can reduce the chance of a child or teen engaging in risky behaviors such as using tobacco, alcohol and marijuana,” she notes.

Simple Steps to Build This Habit:

  1. Start Small: Aim for at least 1-2 meals together each week. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner—it all counts!

  2. Cook Together: Get the kids involved in simple meal prep tasks. It makes the experience fun and educational.

  3. Unplug and Be Present: Turn off the screens and focus on each other.

  4. Plan Ahead: Prep meals that are nutritious, simple, and family-friendly.

Sitting down for family meals doesn’t have to be perfect—it’s about being together, laughing, sharing, and creating memories.
